Dispatch for the fire was at approximately 8:12 a.m., DiRienzo said. The building is a separate structure located on the same property as 122 Gleneida Ave., according to the assistant chief.
The building contains three apartments housing three families, DiRienzo said. The affected unit had moderate fire damage in a closet and hallway, while there was smoke damage through it, according to DiRienzo. The other two units were not damaged, he added.
A female resident was taken to Putnam Hospital Center due to a report of smoke inhalation, according to DiRienzo.
Twelve people were displaced by the fire but were later allowed to return, DiRienzo added. He also explained that Carmel's Building Inspector deemed the damaged apartment to be habitable. However, he said the fire's cause is under investigation.
Mutual aid from other fire departments, according to the assistant chief, include an on-site response from Mahopac and a standby presence from Kent, which meant being stationed at Carmel's firehouse.
