Gordon Curtis Gaston, of Mount Vernon and arrested early Wednesday, shortly after police found the injured man lying in the street around 3:10 a.m., said David Chong, commissioner of the White Plains Department of Public Safety.

The injured man was found after White Plains officers responded to a report of a fight involving two men at the corner of Post Road and Mamaroneck Avenue, Chong said.

Once on the scene, they found a 26-year-old man who had a stab wound to his torso, Chong said.

City surveillance cameras helped officers track down Gaston who was seen on Hamilton Avenue, and officers in the area were able to apprehend him following a short foot pursuit, Chong said.

"This type of violence is a rare occurrence in the downtown area," Chong added.

Officers recovered the knife used in the attack. An investigation into the incident is continuing.

The stabbing victim was taken to an area hospital, where he listed in serious but stable condition, Chong said.

Gaston was charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
