Carlos H. Lopez, 21, a homeless Brewster man who was in jail on felony charges of third-degree criminal mischief, has now been charged with two counts of second-degree assault, also a felony, the sheriff said.

According to Smith, Lopez attacked the officers on Monday, Feb. 8. The sheriff did not describe the exact circumstances of the alleged assault or the extent of the officers' injuries.

Lopez was arraigned before Carmel Town Justice Thomas Jacobellis and sent back to the jail on $50,000 bail.

If found guilty of the assault charges, Lopez could face up to seven years behind bars and a fine of up to $5,000 for each one, Smith said.

He also faces up to four years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000 for the criminal mischief charges for which he was originally held, the sheriff said.
