MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- A structure fire on Route 6 in Mahopac Thursday closed traffic and caused tenants to evacuate as firefighters from the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department worked to douse the blaze.
The call came in around 3 p.m. for smoke in a commercial structure at 600 Route 6, with fire, EMS, Fire police, Carmel police and Sheriff's deputies all responding to the scene, according to fire department officials.
First Asst. Chief Bill Nikisher assumed incident command on the South Lake Boulevard side of the building and put out calls to the Carmel Fire Department for their ladder truck and to Mohegan for their Fast Team to respond.
Mahopac Falls Fire Department was put on standby in their headquarters and the Putnam County Fire investigation team responded to the scene.
The source of the fire and heavy smoke emanated from the apartments located above the Mahopac Spa and Curves businesses.
Fire police closed down traffic to the 6N side of town and detoured traffic out to Route 6. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
