One of the suspected attackers was armed with a 6 ½-inch plexiglass shank, according to prison officials, who said that two of the officers had to be transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Medical Center for treatment and did not return to duty.

Charlie Scott, who began a 25-year sentence in 2007 after being convicted of first-degree manslaughter, appears to have instigated the incident about 7:30 p.m., according to officials, who said that Scott refused multiple requests from a female officer to “calm down” as he was being escorted.

While Scott was refusing commands, two other inmates – Dontavious Wiley and Gerald Howard – surrounded the female officer, refusing requests to disperse and forcing her to call for assistance, according to officials.

After a second officer arrived, Wiley and Howard each continued holding a “threatening stance,” according to officials, who said that Howard then struck the second officer without warning.

Wiley, who began serving a 25-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter in 2008, is alleged to have charged at the female officer, grabbing her and falling to the ground, according to officials, who said that Wiley struck both officers while dragging a third who had responded to the scene down to the ground.

Several other officers then responded and eventually restrained Wiley, officials said, adding that he was later found to be carrying the shank in his underwear.

Soon after, officers subdued Howard, who is serving two years in prison after a 2016 conviction on an attempted weapons possession charge, according to officials.

Scott and Wiley were both taken to special housing units later Tuesday evening, according to officials. Howard was taken to an outside hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the incident. According to officials, he, too, will be taken to a special housing unit when he returns to prison. All three inmates face internal disciplinary charges.

“This was an extremely violent and volatile situation for all of our officers involved. What started out as a medication run to the clinic turned out to be very dangerous for all of our officers when the three inmates attacked and hurt six officers,” said Michael Mazzella, Mid-Hudson Region Vice President of the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc.

Mazzella continued to say that it was a lucky thing none of the officers suffered any serious injuries.

Officials did not describe any of the injuries suffered by the six officers but said the two who were taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Medical Center did not return to work. The four other officers received treatment from medical staff at the prison facility and continued their shifts.
