The incident took place around 4 a.m. when the police department received a 911 call from the hospital reporting a man with a gun in the parking lot, Roman said.

Upon arrival, officers found the man sitting in a vehicle in the Emergency Room parking lot. The man, who had a handgun, told officers he was going to kill himself, Roman added.

Members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s Crisis Negotiations Unit, along with The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiations Unit made contact with the man and after two hours they managed to talk him into surrendering, Roman said.

The distraught man was then safely escorted into the hospital for treatment.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department was assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and the Fairview Fire Department.
