"Heading out to a scene of a horrible accident on Mill Plain Rd. 3 confirmed fatalities," Boughton said via Twitter.

Of the five occupants in the car, three were killed in the 5 a.m. crash, Boughton said via Twitter. WLAD.com identified the three fatalities as male victims.

The car was so badly damaged it was not clear what kind it was, Boughton said. The does have Connecticut licensee plates, he said.

"Just to be clear, Putnam County Sheriff was breaking off pursuit. Car continued to travel at a high rate speed," Boughton said via Twitter.

The pursuing N.Y. sheriff was OK but was taken to the hospital for observation, Boughton said via Twitter.

Assistant Danbury Fire Chief Mark Omasta said the Nissan Altima hit a steel pole near the commuter lot at Exit 2, according to WLAD.com.

The identities of the three male victims were not released, WLAD said. Two female patients were taken to Danbury Hospital, one for observation and one with a broken arm, WLAD said.

Mill Plain Road, which is Routes 6 and 202, parallels I-84 in both Connecticut and New York in that area.
