Who would you support in the race for the 19th Congressional District?
- Antonio Delgado
- John Faso
- Undecided
The poll released by the American Association of Retired Persons found Delgado of Rhinebeck has a lead of 43 percent to 36 percent over Faso, a Republican from Kinderhook.
The poll surveyed registered voters who are 50 or older and residing in the 19th Congressional District, which includes Dutchess County. The margin of error is four percentage points, meaning the race also can be considered a tossup.
Faso is seeking a second term in the Hudson Valley district that stretches from Dutchess County into the Capital District.
"With five weeks to go before Election Day, candidates in New York would be wise to listen to the state’s most powerful voting group: 50-plus voters," AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel said in a statement. "History shows older voters turn out in force, and AARP is seeking to ensure issues of particular importance to older voters are front and center – issue like Medicare, Social Security, prescription drug costs, and family caregiving."
Alan Newman Research surveyed 610 registered voters between Sept. 6 and 16, according to AARP.
According to AARP's poll, older voters are concerned about healthcare costs and the future of Social Security and Medicare.
About 77 percent of the respondents said they are concerned about social and political divisions in the United States, the poll found.
While 61 percent disapprove of the job performance of Congressional Republicans and 55 percent disapprove of Congressional Democrats, 54 percent disapprove of President Donald Trump's performance, according to the AARP poll.
The surveys are part of AARP’s “Be the Difference. Vote” campaign designed to encourage older Americans to make their voices heard at the ballot box this fall. For details on AARP’s campaign, click here: www.aarp.org/vote
AARP said it does not endorse candidates or make contributions to political parties, political campaigns or candidates.
