To the editor:

As we have witnessed over the past few years, many legislators have been convicted of felonies, for abusing their power and the public trust. How is it that they are still allowed to collect their pension and retirement benefits? The elected officials in Albany just don’t seem to get it.

When we walk through the doors and cast our collective votes for an elected official on election Day, we are giving them power. We are entrusting in them to do what is right and what is fair. There are many good elected officials who work hard for the people, and I thank them.

There is no room or tolerance for those who abuse their power and there must be some consequence. Nobody said politics was easy and it can certainly be a thankless job. That is no excuse for the mess that has become our state capitol. Though we may not all agree on certain issues, we certainly did not vote to give them the power to manipulate, to steal, or to abuse their power.

Some in the Senate and Assembly have once again put forth legislation proposing to remove pension and retirement benefits from persons convicted of certain felonies. This legislation must pass and I strongly believe that any elected official who has abused their power and is convicted of a felony should not be entitled to their pension and benefits.

Let’s send a message and take away what they now do not deserve – no pensions!
