The field trip served as the culmination of the class’ exploration into the many refugee crises around the world. Students had the opportunity to meet with Chief of Migration Bela Hovy in the UN offices. Hovy took some time from his day to talk to the students about his experiences working in the division and in refugee camps, and answered students’ questions, which they had prepared prior to the trip.
“Our kids were on point – thoughtfully, and for some, bravely, asking either their prepared questions or ones they developed at the moment,” Shropshire said. Shropshire noted that the students were fully engaged throughout the entire trip and that the experience was one his students will never forget.
“As expected, the trip was a great success,” Shropshire said. “Every step of our journey, from the walk to the train, to the train trip, to our tours of Grand Central and our ultimate destination, the United Nations, contributed to every one of our students’ growth.”
