Fourth-grader Charlie Garcia was recognized with the award in the name of Jacob Greenfield

Jacob was a kindergartner at PVES who died in a car accident in 1994. By all accounts he was filled with curiosity and possessed a unique vision. He has been described as adventurous and playful and as a child who carefully examined all new facts and ideas as well as artistic, reveling in bold colors and shapes.

"Jacob was a bright and shining star who illuminated our lives for a brief time, and whose spirit continues to encourage all of us to celebrate our uniqueness," said Barbara Parmly, retired PVES teacher, and former teacher of Jacob's, who presents the award each year.

"This recipient is a quiet, steady light," said Parmly, "that we don’t always notice, but without whom, we wander in darkness. This student is a model for thinking deeply and making insightful connections between new learning and the known. Charlie Garcia reminds us to go beyond the flash and to daily celebrate our unique concern for everything that is around us."
