PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- Putnam Valley High School senior Mariana Silva is a National Merit Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in the program and score in the top one percent nationally.
"This is an impressive achievement and we are very proud of Mariana," principal Sandra Intrieri said.
As a semifinalists, she will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to be considered for a Merit Scholarship award by advancing to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent are expected to attain Finalist standing and about half of the finalists will earn a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
