The most dangerous part of an approaching storm system is coming into sharper focus, with millions facing the threat of damaging winds and flooding.
The National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center says a broad section of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic faces a slight risk of excessive rainfall Thursday, Aug. 27, as a slow-moving front taps deep moisture and instability.
The risk zone extends from the Washington, DC, area northeast through Baltimore, Philadelphia, northern New Jersey, New York City, and parts of eastern New York.

A passenger who feared for his life jumped from a vehicle as its driver fled police on a chase that went onto a Main Street sidewalk in Connecticut.
Daniel Carpenter, 60, of Plainfield, was arrested Monday, Aug. 24, and faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, in the wild chase, Middletown police said.
The incident began as a routine traffic stop on Main and Court streets in Middletown. As police approached Carpenter, he jumped the curb and began driving down the sidewalk, authorities said.

British actor and singer Tim Curry died late Tuesday, Aug. 25, at his Los Angeles home, TMZ first reported. He was 80. Police were called to the home late Tuesday, and no foul play was suspected, according to TMZ, which first reported the news.

Abused Dog Found With Open Wounds, Fly Infestation In New York: Authorities
A Long Island man was arrested after his dog was found infested with flies and suffering from open wounds, authorities said.
Cecilio Matthews, 50, of Bellport, was charged with several counts of animal cruelty under state and county laws, the Suffolk County SPCA said Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Investigators determined earlier in the month that Matthews had failed to care for his 10-year-old mutt, Seven, leaving the dog neglected in a yard, according to the SPCA.
